John W. Burke came to Alexandria in 1848 from Mount Ivy in Caroline County, Virginia, his birthplace and family seat. During the Federal occupation of Alexandria (1861-1865) Burke was held in jail or under house arrest, and rather than risk Federal confiscation he closed the bank’s operations. The Alexandria Gazette later reported that depositors lost no money during the occupation — Burke had personally safeguarded their accounts. After the war he reopened the bank with Herbert and brought his son Julian Thompson Burke into the firm in 1877, beginning the long Burke-family succession that continues today.
