Narrative

Place narrative

Belle Haven Country Club was founded in 1924 on the Potomac waterfront south of Old Town Alexandria, in what was then the rural Belle Haven section of Fairfax County. The club was named for the surrounding Belle Haven neighborhood — itself an early-twentieth-century subdivision platted on land that had been part of the colonial-era Belle Haven plantation tract.

The club’s 18-hole golf course occupies a wooded parcel sloping east toward the Potomac, with the clubhouse and tennis courts sited on higher ground along Fort Hunt Road. The original 1924 clubhouse has been expanded multiple times across the twentieth century, but the basic Colonial Revival vocabulary — clapboard siding, hipped roof, white-painted columned porch — has been preserved through successive renovations.

Belle Haven Country Club has historically drawn membership from the Belle Haven, Fort Hunt, and southern Alexandria residential communities along the Mount Vernon / Richmond Highway corridor. The club operates today as a private membership club, with facilities open only to members and their guests.

Specific founding-membership records, the original architect of record for the 1924 clubhouse, and the chain of land-acquisition titles between the colonial Belle Haven plantation grant and the 1924 country-club founding are research targets for a future deepening against Fairfax County land-records archives and the Belle Haven community’s own historical materials.
